Chemotherapy Skin Cream Improves Sun-Damaged and Wrinkled Skin
Although the skin cream was generally well tolerated, most of the participants found the treatment at least moderately uncomfortable and one person developed severe skin inflammation and had to stop using the skin cream. The cream caused the skin to become red and irritated, making it peel as it worked to eliminate unhealthy skin. In the weeks following, the skin of the participants recovered with softer wrinkles and better texture. Fluorouracil works to reduce the signs of sun damage by increasing the levels of a precursor to collagen, which rebuilds damaged skin.

The twenty remaining participants completed a questionnaire in week ten of the study in which 40 percent reported sun damage to be much improved while 35 percent saw moderate improvement. For wrinkles, 42 percent experienced mild improvement, with 26 percent noting moderate improvement, and 16 percent had much improvement. All of the participants had at least a mild improvement in their skin texture, and overall, 75 percent said they were either moderately and very satisfied with the results.

The majority of the volunteers said they would opt to undergo the treatment again, with 17 out of 19 of them even acknowledging that they would be willing to pay for it. According to the researchers, the skin cream would be less costly than laser skin resurfacing, however, use of the cream may not achieve the same degree of improvement.

The participants were followed for almost six months, during which time they received skin biopsies and dermatology checkups on a regular basis. In addtion, close-up facial photographs were taken of each participant.

In their report, the researchers wrote, “For patients in whom a course of topical fluorouracil is indicated for the treatment of actinic keratoses, there will likely be the additional benefit of a restorative effect from sun damage.” They concluded, “It is possible that for some patients topical fluorouracil may have an important role against photo-aging…. Undoubtedly, there will be patients who desire a therapy such as topical fluorouracil for cosmetic purposes given the relatively low cost of this therapy compared with ablative laser resurfacing.”

Vodafone, the London-based company, wrote down by more than 25 percent the value of its Indian operations

after paying $11 billion for a majority stake in it just three years ago.

In the bidding, Vodafone won spectrum in nine regions, including Delhi and Mumbai, for $2.5 billion.

Seven companies submitted winning bids for a total of 71 licenses, pledging to pay 509 billion rupees ($10.9 billion).

The auction results will also determine the price two state-owned phone companies, MTNL and BSNL, will pay for spectrum they have already been allotted.

Taking those payments into account, the government said it would earn 677 billion rupees ($14.6 billion),

compared with the 350 billion rupees it had estimated earlier this year.

Bharti AirTel, which is India’s biggest cellphone company and recently signed a deal to buy a large African mobile operation,

spent the most for the spectrum, bidding $2.6 billion for airwaves in 13 regions, according to this article in the New York Times.

Another big Indian company, Reliance Communications, bid $1.8 billion for airwaves in 13 regions.

Shares in Bharti AirTel fell 3.1 percent and Reliance Communications closed down 5.7 percent on Thursday.

Though the spectrum is intended for high-speed services known in the industry as third-generation, or 3G,

most companies are likely to use the airwaves primarily to carry phone calls and text messages.

Data remains a niche application in India, where most people spend just a few dollars a month on wireless service.

Telecom companies have struggled in recent months to deliver reliable service to customers

after the Indian government began reviewing telecom equipment purchases last year, citing security concerns.

Many carriers desperately need to increase capacity for new customers, which may have driven up bids in the auction.

Asked about which currency will be the 'king' in the next ten years, Joseph answered without a shadow of a doubt: “USD”.

The inception of the Euro took place in January 1999. What did the change from 11 different currencies to one mean for the currency market ?

The biggest change was the reduction in volatility. When every European country had its own currency, the limited liquidity in many of the smaller ones almost guaranteed heavy volatility in any less than normal trading situation. Most of that trading interest is now concentrated on the euro.

How did this event impact on the FX global market at that time and in the following years?

It was initially feared that the advent of the euro would diminish interest in currency trading, that has not proved to be the case. Fortunately for currency trading the euro began at almost the same time as the internet. The growth in interest in currency trading was given a huge boost by the net and the retail firms that brought forex trading to every computer.

Bariatric Surgery May Reduce Pregnancy Risks for Obese Women
Approximately half of the pregnant women in the United States today are either overweight or obese, up from about 25 percent four decades ago, and making them at an increased risk for pre-eclampsia, hypertensive disorder and blood clots, not to mention complications from a C-section. In a study published today in the British Medical Journal, researchers found that these complications can be significantly reduced through bariatric surgery prior to conception.

Bariatric surgery is a procedure commonly performed on those who are dangerously obese to induce weight loss. Gastric bypass surgery helps to achieve weight loss by creating a small stomach pouch with a stapler device and connecting it to the distal small intestine. The upper part of the small intestine is then re-attached in a Y-shape. After the surgery, overeating is prevented by having limited stomach capacity that causes nausea and vomiting when capacity is exceeded. For many patients who are obese, the health benefits of gastric bypass surgery may far outweigh the risks of the procedure. Research suggests that bariatric surgery can actually increase the life expectancy of many who suffer from obesity, meaning they could be parenting much longer into the future than without the surgery.

This new study, conducted by Wendy L. Bennett and colleagues at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, analyzed the medical records of females of childbearing age who underwent weight-loss surgery either before delivering a child or after delivery. "Women who delivered after surgery had a 75 percent lower odds of a diagnosis of a hypertensive disorder in pregnancy than women who had a delivery before surgery," the study’s authors reported. There was also a 61 percent reduction in the risk of chronic hypertension and 74 percent decrease in gestational diabetes.

Treatment Criteria for Eating Disorders Too Narrow?
it isn’t surprising that eating disorders are on the rise considering the emphasis our society places on being thin. Ads in magazines and on the television tend to use the most idealized images of women, touched up and air-brushed to perfection.

Statistics on eating disorders are staggering. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), 10 million people in the United States, mainly women, struggle with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. Then there are those who show signs of disordered eating yet don’t fit the exact clinical definitions of anorexia or bulimia. These cases are designated eating disorder not otherwise specified, or EDNOS. Binge eating is a type of EDNOS. And it is the sufferers of EDNOS that lack categorization and treatment options, often causing long-term damage.

While eating disorders may start with preoccupations with food and weight, they are most often about much more than food. People with eating disorders often use food and the control of food in an attempt to compensate for feelings and emotions that may otherwise seem overwhelming.

Being diagnosed with EDNOS is "a bit misleading to patients—it can make them feel like they don't have a real eating disorder," said Dr. Rebecka Peebles, an adolescent medicine specialist with the Comprehensive Eating Disorders Program at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in California.

Dr. Peebles was part of a research team studying the medical records of more than 1,300 female patients treated for eating disorders. Of that group, almost two-thirds were diagnosed with EDNOS, 60 percent of which met medical criteria for hospitalization and, on average, were sicker than patients diagnosed with full-blown bulimia. The sickest of these EDNOS patients had lost more than 25 percent of their body weight before finally being diagnosed and admitted. Many had been overweight to begin with and the weight loss was viewed as a normal progression, although went far beyond normal.

Other findings, published online today in the journal Pediatrics, has led the researchers to suggest that there is a need to re-evaluate and further define eating disorders, particularly EDNOS, and to begin medical intervention and treatment regimens sooner than had been previously considered.

Euroland Manufacturing flash PMI increased from 52.4 to 54.1 in February thus beating expectations (consensus 52.6, Danske 52.7) while service PMI declined to 52.0 from 52.5 (Consensus 52.5, Danske 52.6). Manufacturing PMI is now at the highest level since August 2007.

Composite new orders were flat at 53.6, but manufacturing new orders increased slightly from 56.0 to 56.5 and manufacturing new export orders increased strongly from 53.8 to 56.0 – the highest level since December 2006.

Inventories of finished goods increased slightly from 44.5 to 44.9 and inventories of stocks purchases were almost unchanged – up from 45.4 to 45.5. The order-inventory balance is thus coming down indicating that the pull from the inventory cycle is slowing.
Employment expectations increased strongly driven by a jump in manufacturing employment expectations from 43.9 to 47.0 and a moderate increase in service sector employment expectations from 47.5 to 48.4. The composite index is now at the highest level since September 2008.

German composite PMI increased from 54.2 to 55.4 and German manufacturing PMI increased massively to 57.1 from 53.4. This is a very comforting indication that the German rebound is still on track despite the lack of growth in Q4. The manufacturing subcomponents show that new orders and in particular new export orders increased strongly while stocks where almost unchanged. German service PMI increased from 51.2 to 51.7. German manufacturing sector employment expectations spiked from 42.1 to 47.3. Composite PMI indicates a stable German labour market.

French PMI composite index fell to 55.7 from 58.0 previously. This is the lowest level in five months, but still signalling strong growth. Manufacturing PMI fell from 55.4 to 54.6 and service PMI fell from 56.3 to 54.7. New manufacturing orders declined from 58.8 to 55.1 – the lowest level since August last year. New export orders increased slightly. At the same time the indices for stocks of both purchases and finished goods increased notably, thus the prospects of a growth contribution from the inventory cycle are diminishing. Employment expectations in the manufacturing sector improved from 46.4 to 49.3 and are thus very close to signalling a labour market stabilisation in France.

Soy Products May Actually Lower Breast Cancer Patients Risk of Death
There has been conflicting evidence as to whether soy foods increase breast cancer risks or reduce the chances of breast cancer. With soy products of all kinds gaining in popularity, women are concerned about consumption when they are at risk of or have experienced breast cancer. Now, there is new evidence indicating soy foods may actually benefit women that eat moderate amounts by reducing their risk of breast cancer recurrence and lower their risk of death.

Because soy contains isoflavone, an estrogen-like compound which in labs seemed to help cancer cells to grow and increase tumor growth in animals, many breast cancer patients have worried that by eating soy products they may be increasing their odds of recurrence or death. However, based on a new study published in the December 9th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, there seems to be no reason for breast cancer patients to avoid soy foods.

The lead author of the newly released study, Dr. Xiao Ou Shu, a professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University, and her colleagues used data from the Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study that consisted of 5,042 Chinese women ranging in age from 20 to 75 that had been diagnosed with breast cancer between March 2002 and April 2006, for their study. The group examined data on cancer progression at six months following a breast cancer diagnosis, and again at 18, 36, and 60 months following the diagnosis. The group considered the cancer diagnosis, treatment, and lifestyle factors of the patients, including their diets.

And a new study being published in the May issue of Personality Individual Differences reinforces that belief.

Researchers at Brigham Young University set out to gauge hidden feelings about body image. They conducted psychological screenings of both men and women using brain imaging technology. MRI scans were employed to monitor the brain activity of the participants while they were shown computer-generated images of different body types. While viewing each image, the participants were asked to imagine that someone else was saying the model looked like them.

Not surprisingly, the images of overweight women triggered the self-reflection and identity processing area in the brain in only the female participants. The medial prefrontal cortex lit up in not just a few, but all of the women. Mark Allen, a neuroscientist at BYU said, "This is kind of validating the suspicion that most women are teetering on the edge of an eating disorder. If the brain response is so strong in these apparently healthy women, maybe most of us could use a little dose of what it is that you go through in an eating disorder therapy."

JPY - Yen Continues to Strengthen

The Japanese yen strengthened across the board yesterday as mixed U.S. data and fundamental weakness in the European Union continues to boost the Asian currency. Following both negative U.S. unemployment data but positive Philly Fed Manufacturing numbers, the yen outperformed most currencies in yesterday's trading.
